The Autumn Series, part of the Pwllheli Challenge, continues tomorrow with two races. The IRC warning signal is at 10:00 AM, followed by NHC. Further information on Saturday morning - Ch17, and on the racing "Whats App" group.
Welsh Regional Junior Championship 2020
The event was rescheduled over three venues due to Welsh Government COVID restrictions, with Pwllheli hosting the Laser 4.7's and Windsurfer classes last weekend in champagne sailing conditions.

Congratulations to all the competitors and class winners, which included CHPSC Sailor Arwen Fflur winning the Lasers 4.7's at Pwllheli, and CHIPAC sailors Annabelle Pierce-Jones taking 4th ahead of Ffion Wood 5th in the lasers and Noah Wood wining the Topper class down at Neyland. Osian Parry (Plas Menai) won the windsurfer event.
Many thanks to the race management teams, committee boat and event volunteers from RYA CW (led by Rosy Hearn and Sarah McGovern) CHPSC and Plas Heli (led by Richard Tudor, Gerallt Williams and Chris Hoppins) who made the event so successful.

Member Spotlight - Eifion Owen
Many members will know Eifion, who is a former CHPSC commodore, current member of the club management committee and CHIPAC senior instructor. As well as being a highly experienced inshore and offshore sailor, having completed many inshore and offshore events including ISORA races, Eifion spent his early years windsurfing, and was the first person to wind surf from North Wales to Ireland, a distance of 47 miles starting at Whistling Sands, and finishing at Wicklow.

Eifion continues to sail, race, row and cycle around his beloved Llyn Peninsula, and who knows what his next challenge will be!

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) have joined forces to produce a new series of 'How to' videos with advice and tips on how to safely enjoy being on the water.
The RNLI were called out more than 13,000 times to boaters between 2017 and 2019. The first video, released today (link here) - reveals the top five reasons lifeboat crews were called into action along with tips on how to avoid the need to call for help.
They include human error, sinking, running aground and equipment failure. But the top reason for an emergency call out in the last two years involving a boat was machinery failure, with more than 4,000 incidents.
The short series of videos will also cover topics such as electronic navigation, rules of the road, the shipping forecast and best practice when riding a Personal Watercraft (PWC).

CHPSC News:
The Autumn Series, part of the Pwllheli Challenge, started last Saturday with a stiff breeze to test the competitors. Race Officer Robin Evans managed an excellent weekend of racing in champagne sailing conditions, with a big fleet coming to the line. The short start line and easterly winds made for a real spectacle from ashore.
Congratulations to Injenious, Mojito and Wil2Win for race wins in the IRC and NHC classes.

Transformers!
The transformer, BBC News Wales reports, was unloaded from an 262.5ft (80m) barge on the beach at Morfa Bychan (also known as Black Rock Sands) Porthmadog, Gwynedd which was described as "the size of a large motorhome", it will remain on Morfa Bychan beach until it is transported to Trawsfynydd substation where it will replace an old model. It is the first time National Grid has used a public Welsh beach in this way.
National Grid said the new transformer, which regulates the voltage of electricity between circuits, "will ensure power continues to be delivered reliably" to the local area.
The company said it had used the beach to avoid disruption at Porthmadog Harbour.

Member Spotlight - Gwyndaf Hughes
Many members will know Gwyndaf, who is a former commodore, current member of the club management committee and manages the dinghy compound for CHPSC. As well as being a highly experienced inshore and offshore sailor, having completed iconic races such as Round Ireland, and many ISORA races, Gwyndaf is perhaps better known for his work teaching children to sail, and in particular his tireless work with our youth section "CHIPAC", and at aged 81 is still an integral part of CHIPAC providing his wisdom, experience and guidance.
In 2011, Gwyndaf was recognised for his contribution, being presented with a recognition award at the Sport Wales "Coach of the Year" Awards - 2011 in Cardiff on November 16. Below is an article written in the Daily Post
A SAILING coach who carried on teaching youngsters after being diagnosed with a serious illness is to receive a special award at a prestigious ceremony.
Gwyndaf Hughes has been a volunteer sailing coach for 49 years.
Even during his treatment Gwyndaf still turned up every Monday and Friday to help prepare boats and organise paper work.
He received the all clear in November 2010 – and was straight back into his regular 10-12 hours a week of volunteering at the club.
School teacher Gwyndaf, from Pwllheli, said: “I came back to the area in 1962 and formed the club in 1963. I was a craft and design teacher at Ysgol Glan y Môr (Pwllheli) and started the sailing club in school, which I ran until I retired 17 years ago.
“I kept going down to the club during my treatmnents and, although the members wouldn’t allow me to do too much, something like that gives you a great incentive. It’s great to be with youngsters all the time and maybe I’m still a bit of a youngster myself, which is why coaching appeals.
“If you take coaching and volunteering as a long-term project you’ll see the better side of youngsters. I don’t recollect having to seriously tell anyone off in all my years of teaching sailing.”
Gwyndaf has coached generations of young people in sailing and passed his Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Senior Instructor course at Plas Menai in 2010
His efforts were recognised by the RYA when he received their prestigious Community Award for services to the sport, and Pwllheli Sailing Club in particular.
Among the people inspired
by his coaching over the years is Round the World Yachtsman Richard Tudor.
Former pupil Aimee Saracco-Jones said: “He taught me and many others about respecting and appreciating the sea and the coastline where we live.
“Gwyndaf also taught my father to sail when he was a young boy. He is now 46 and one of the RYA senior dinghy instructors. Most of the instructors have been taught by him"

CHPSC News:
Racing Captain Victoria Cox reports - As golden colours start to appear on the trees and crisp leaves crunch underfoot, it can only mean one thing....... it’s time for the Pwllheli Challenge "Autumn Series", 4 weekends of racing round the cans. And having lost our scheduled Spring Series racing due to Covid-19, we’ll make the most of any good weather and continue late into the year with the Pwllheli Winter Series too. I’m sure everyone is eager to continue on the water for as long as possible to make up for missed sailing earlier in the year.
Both series will include several classes dependant on number of entries and will also include an NHC class for cruisers. Online entry is open and early entry is encouraged by the 18th September to allow class splits to be calculated prior to the series start. Why not take this opportunity to subscribe to the CHPSC Skippers membership if you haven’t already.
As we are all becoming accustomed to during these times, some changes have been applied, namely the number of crew allowed and as a result, the number of races scheduled per weekend.

Please make note of the amendment to crew numbers and the responsibility of skippers to help limit the spread of Covid. There has been an immense amount of work and negotiations by our flag officers this year to enable us to enjoy the racing we have done. As none of us want to return to the restrictions imposed back in April where we weren’t even able to visit our boats, it is important that we all do our bit to comply.
Pwllheli Sailing Club is ready -if you are we can’t wait to see you all out on the water for some fantastic racing.
Member Spotlight - Roger Fitzgerald
Long time member Roger recently competed in the NHC cruiser event, part of the IRC Welsh Championships, and has been a great supporter of the cruiser class in recent years. Roger generally races with his grandchildren on his Dehler 29 "Ella Trout III".
Roger is also a proflific solo racer, having completed many elements of the Jester Challenge, reresenting Pwllheli with aplomb. We invite you to view an account of his solo atlantic crossing to Newport Rhode Island 10 years ago, this can be viewed here.
We look forward to seeing Roger on the start line for many more years, and reading/watching his accounts.
