Flag Officers Friday Newsletter
Welcome to the Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club Friday newsletter.
Yesterday the Tremadog Bay Pop up Regatta got underway, with racing organised for both IRC 1 and 2 Racers and NHC Cruisers, representing a wide spectrum of boats and up to 100 members taking part as crew or shore based supporters.
The regatta was devised by our race captain Vicky Cox, assisted by the club racing committee and flag officers, to fill the gap left by the cancellation of the Volvo Dun Laoghaire regatta. We wish all competitors and crew a great weekend's sailing. Further information is in the racing section below, where the skippers newsletter is posted.
There is a social programme arranged in Plas Heli, with some special catering offerings and a live band tonight -the Jac Dobson a'r band, and all are welcome.
it will be wonderful to see members from all sections of the club on the water and/or in Plas Heli this weekend.
Congratulations to Andrew Hall (Jackknife) - winning the Lyver Race last weekend (Liverpool to Pwllheli), and well done to Peter Dunlop and Vicky Cox (Mojito) Mark Thompson (Jac Y Do) and Paul Kitteringham (Finally) for completing the tough 120 mile race

Message from Stephen Williams Darling XX
Weather has been fantastic recently and summer is in full swing. The ‘Pop Up Regatta’ takes place 8th to 11th July. There is no need to enter all the races and reduced fees apply for 2 day entry. An NHC Class will be run for cruisers or shorthanded IRC boats. The race officer will set courses to suit the entrants with the emphasis upon keeping the sailing fun and not too taxing. Already we have interest and I hope to see as many as possible boats out. If you can’t get your own boat out then consider crewing for someone else. I am sure there will be crew spaces available. Bring friends and family as there is no need to be experienced to join in the fun.
I am donating a prize a bottle of rum for the second to last boat in the series. That means there is always a reason to keep going. Good luck everyone and I hope to see you out sailing.’

Communication
The official notice board for the event will be a WhatsApp group called “Pop up Regatta notice board”
It’s not a chat group - plenty of other places for that, but somewhere for us to post messages/courses/results etc or for you to ask racing relevant questions, which we will attempt to answer as quickly as possible, consistent with the volunteer organisation workload.
Racing Information.
All mark positions, fixed courses are published on the Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club Website, in the racing section here (ST please insert link
It would be very helpful if everyone could carry a copy of the the fixed courses on board to reduce our Race officers workload reading out courses, particularly as he is dealing with multiple classes.
Note with kind permission of SCYC we may also use the following marks:
Tom Buoy

Flag Officers Friday Newsletter
Welcome to the Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club Friday newsletter.
The weekend of the 12th and 13th June certainly saw CHPSC and Pwllheli burst into life. A second successive hot and sunny weekend saw many boats of all descriptions taking to the water.
Friday evening saw the long-awaited return of the CHIPAC youth and junior training sessions which as usual was well supported with six new pupils and eight returning experienced sailors. Many thanks to all the volunteers and instructors for their hard work in making this possible
Saturday saw the start of Race 7 of The ISORA series, an Offshore 115 mile race from Pwllheli to Liverpool. Three boats - Mojito, Jac Y Do and Finally came to the start at 07.35hrs and Jackknife started an hour later at 08.35hrs. Mojito won the race ahead of Jac Y Do in a time of 17 hrs 57 minutes.Mojito, Jac y Do and Finally starting from the CHPSC Club line
CHPSC and Plas Heli also hosted the flagship RYA Cymru Wales 2021 Welsh Youth and Junior Championships for the International Laser (ILCA) and 29er classes. Saturday saw champagne sailing conditions in the bay resulting in some exciting and close racing. Yet again our local CHPSC/CHIPAC sailors have done us all proud with Arwen Fflur and Ffion Wood taking 1st and 2nd overall in the International Laser 4.7 Class. Fin Sinclair of Neyland Yacht Club took 3rd Place. Another CHIPAC sailor Annabelle Pierce-Jones achieved a very commendable 7th place. Congratulations to them all.
Arwen and Ffion will both be competing in the World Championships in Dun Laoghaire this August, and I am sure you will all join me in wishing them all the very best. They are indeed a credit to the Club.
The 29er class was won by Aled Llewelyn-Jones and Ben Bradley (Saundersfoot SC/Hill Head HISC) 2nd place went to Ewan Plowden-Wardlaw and Matthew Mikk of Wessex SC and in third place were Tom Storey and Ben Willets (Yorkshire Dales/Llandegfedd).
The International Laser 4.7s in action at Pwllheli
Hot action at the start line for the 29ers
Due to a lack of wind on Sunday racing was initially delayed allowing the committee boat crew time to relax and enjoy what the waters of Cardigan Bay in another way.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the event a great success. A special thank you also to Tim and Carol Twells for the use of their beautiful Beneteau 40.7 as the race committee boat
Sunday also saw the start of the Jester Challenge to find out more about these intrepid group of sailors click here.
This year’s event should have seen the boats sail to Baltimore to arrive in time for the annual Pirates’ Week but the situation prevailing due to the Covid pandemic meant that an alternative one-off event was arranged. Competitors had a choice of three start lines Pwllheli, Cardiff and Plymouth. They then have to sail across the Irish Sea to a virtual waypoint at 51N 8W which is equidistant from the three locations. Having rounded the mark, they have to sail back to the finish at St Ann’s Head at the entrance to Milford Haven. These skippers all sail single handed and in vessels not exceeding 30ft in length.
The start at Pwllheli was a close affair with David Knowler first across the line in his Achilles 840 HEADWAY III closely followed by Bob Angell in his 1908 Morecambe Prawner COMRADES and Geoff Turner in his Parker 21 DAWN. Pwllheli’s Roger Fitzgerald was last over the line due to a technical problem with the main halyard, but was soon on the heels of the leaders.
The sight of a wooden sailing boat built in 1908 crossing the start line of a 285mile offshore race was a sight to behold. To learn more of COMRADES’ history check out the following website here
I am extremely pleased to report that despite his problems at the start, Roger Fitzgerald was the first to cross the finishing line at Milford Haven, in his Dehler 29 ELLA TROUT III, after 4 days 2 hours and 45minutes.
Congratulations Roger and many thanks for bringing The Jesters to Pwllheli once again.
All in all, a fantastic weekend for CHPSC and its members.
As there was no racing scheduled for Pwllheli last weekend Pat and I took a short trip across the bay and down the East Passage to Barmouth to watch the start of the 2021 Three Peaks Yacht Race.
If you are not familiar with this event which has taken place annually since 1977, here is a brief explanation.
The boats leave Barmouth with a crew of five, three sailors and two runners. They sail to Caernarfon where, the two runners disembark and run from the dock to the summit of Snowdon and back. Having returned to their boats they then sail to Whitehaven where the runners run to the summit of Scafell Pike. They then sail to Fort William in Scotland where they run to the summit of Ben Nevis and back to the finishing line in Fort William.
The record time for this event was set in 1998 by a Corsair F31R trimaran called “Pwllheli Partnership” and skippered by CHPSC member, past commodore and president Richard Tudor. The time set was a remarkable 2 days, 3 hours and 47 minutes and remains unbeaten to this day.
The start of the 2021 Three Peaks Yacht Race
Finally. Many thanks to everyone who turned out on Saturday morning to assist Gwyndaf Hughes with laying then Dinghy launching mat on North Beach. If you did not receive your invitation to this event, then you are not on the CHPSC volunteer list. To be included in this group please forward your e-mail and mobile number to
I’m sure your efforts will be greatly appreciated by our ever-increasing group of dinghy sailors.
Gwyndaf would like to thank the half dozen members who turned up on Saturday morning to roll out the matting to provide an easier beach launching facility to CHIPAC youngsters, as well as our dinghy sailing members. I am sure that it will be greatly appreciated.
Hoffai Gwyndaf ddiolch i'r aelodau a ddaeth i osod y llithrfa dros dro yn Glan y Don.Bydd hyn yn gwneud lansio cychod bach yn llawer haws i aelodau CHIPAC ac i aelodau o'r Clwb sydd yn hwylio cychod bach.Bydd hefyd yn werthfawr iawn pan yn cynnal cystadlaethau hwylio yma.
You will notice some activity on the Quayside on Monday 28th June - part of the area will be used for the construction of the new slipway for St Tudwal's Island West.
Finally, a big thanks to the volunteers who turned up at short notice on Wednesday to help with moving items from the balcony to the main compound. Diolch - Thanks

A key consideration to maximise safety in the hours of darkness is night vision. It takes our eyes in the region of 10 - 15 minutes to adjust to their best level of performance in the dark but just a brief exposure to white light will re-set the adjustment your eyes have made. Therefore for any vessel which could be out during the hours of darkness, fitting a red light at the chart table (as a minimum) should be considered. Some vessels have red lights in every cabin, the galley and the heads to ensure that night vision is not compromised throughout the hours of darkness.
Caution must be exercised with white light on deck as well. If you look up from the job you are lighting with your head torch, to face someone and speak to them, the light will shine straight in their face. If this is white light, their eyes will have to start from scratch adjusting to the dark. Switching on deck lights should be avoided and torches / head torches should be red light wherever possible.
As well as briefing their crew on night vision and the danger of exposing your eyes – or those of the crew “on watch” - to white light, skippers should also be aware and brief the crew on the detrimental effect that glasses with photochromic lenses can have on night vision. Photochromic lenses reduce night vision significantly and to such an extent that the MCA issued MGN 357 stating that “they should not be worn for lookout duties at night”.
In general when a vessel is at sea overnight, a watch system should be set up, to ensure that someone is nominated for the helm and an adequate look out is kept, whilst still allowing all of the crew have sufficient rest. For vessels undertaking longer passages, watch systems cover more than just who is at the helm. They should include keeping the log, making the dinner, washing the dishes, daily checks and maintenance i.e. a system which manages the running of the boat.
Where there is sufficient crew, such as on commercial ships the crew may be split into three groups each taking four hours on watch followed by 8 hours off some of which they may be standby or maintenance duties. On smaller vessels there is unlikely to be sufficient crew to allow such luxury.
There are no hard and fast rules for watch keeping patterns or rotas. Depending on the number of crew and their levels of experience, the skipper may or may not opt to be included in the watches. Even if the skipper is technically “off watch” the crew should be encouraged to wake the skipper whenever they feel the need and the skipper should ensure that the crew are clear about any circumstance to which they wish to be alerted. Again, these will reflect the experience level of the crew but examples might be if a ship is sighted or a change in the sail plan is required. An inexperienced crew may benefit from these being written down as “standing orders” to prevent them from being forgotten.
There is no right or wrong way of setting up a watch rota. The “right” one is the one that works for that particular voyage, on that particular boat, with that particular crew.
Consideration when drawing up a watch rota should be given to ensuring that the crew will have blocks of sleep of sufficient duration and whether loan watches are 1. necessary and 2. safe, bearing in mind the experience and welfare of the crew members on board. Different watch systems may need to be adopted for different voyages, to suit the people on board.
It could be as simple as 2 watches alternating with 4 hours on and 4 hours off (although this can become monotonous if it is continued for too long, and you will tend to spend every off watch moment in your bunk).
2 watches: 4 hours on 4 hours off
Suitable for: short passages of 1 or 2 days
Advantages: simple to follow
Disadvantages: can become monotonous and will result in sleep deprivation for many people
Other systems may change the times you are on watch each day or the people you are on watch with.
2 watches: 3 hours on, 3 hours off at night and 4 hours on 4 off by day
Suitable for: short passages of 1 or 2 days popular when sailing with just two people on board
Advantages: simple to follow
Disadvantages: will result in sleep deprivation for many people
Most people will only cope with systems like these for a short period and after three or four days their body will be functioning significantly below par. For voyages lasting more than a couple of days many people will need to be given the opportunity for a longer block of sleep each day to allow the body to regenerate. A daily off-watch period of at least 6 hrs should therefore be considered to help people maintain their regular sleep pattern and keep the body functioning properly. With sufficient people on board it may be possible to adopt 4 hour watches at night and 6 hours during the day.
2 watches: 4 hours on 4 hours off at night and 6 hours on 6 hours off during the day
Suitable for: voyages where there are at least two people on each watch
Advantages: simple to follow and changes the times you are on watch each day
Disadvantages: not particularly sociable
If however you have children on board who are sleeping at night and up in the day time, it may be better for the adults to get longer spells of sleep at night when the children are asleep and not requiring attention.
In colder conditions, it is important that people do not stay on deck for too long - which in extreme conditions may be minutes rather than hours. The cold can necessitate a different approach to watch patterns which, together with the attention span often being reduced at night, is why there is a tendency to have shorter watches during the small hours.
Watch rotas do not need to be limited to two watches, if the crew is sufficient in number and or sufficiently experienced. With three adults capable of lone watches, could work 3 hours on 6 hours off.
2 watches: 3 hours on watch and 6 hours off watch
Suitable for: voyages where there are at least three adults capable of loan watches
Advantages: simple to follow and changes the times you are on watch each day
Disadvantages: not particularly sociable
A standby category may be added to this to ensure the person on watch has an extra pair of hands to call on when required such as for changes in sail plan.
2 watches: 3 hours on watch and 6 hours off watch with standby
Suitable for: voyages where there are at least three adults capable of loan watches
Advantages: simple to follow and changes the times you are on watch each day
Disadvantages: the standby element can improve the social element, but at the same time can reduce the quality of sleep
With this arrangement, the right balance needs to be found between what the person on watch can do on their own and when they need to wake the off watch to maximise sleep in good conditions, ensuring the “batteries” are fully charged in case of bad weather.
With 4 or more adults a rolling watch system with two people on watch at all times and a person changing every two hours may be worth considering. The more people there are, the greater the time off watch becomes, but there is a danger that sleep is disturbed by the constant changeovers. This type of system is however easy to adjust if someone is sick and needs time out of the watches.
4 or more watches: 4 hours on watch with 2 hourly changes
Suitable for: larger crews on short passages of 1 or 2 days
Advantages: sociable
Disadvantages: the off watch is limited to 4 hours at a time which may be disturbed by crew changes
Having two people on watch will generally mean that whilst on watch they can cover all aspects of running the boat such as navigating, weather, cooking, cleaning, (childcare) and off watch time really is off watch and equals rest. Times should be set for dinner to be cooked / ready, the navigation lights to be turned on, the dishes to get washed etc. The less experienced the crew, the more formalised the duties are likely to need to be.
On longer voyages a “mother watch” may be utilised, to allocate “household duties” such as cooking, cleaning, washing-up etc. This is simply a slot where two watches are on duty at the same time, but for different reasons. As well as being practical it can make life on board more sociable.
A mother watch is also useful to enable preparation if heavy weather is anticipated, when having meals pre-prepared, ensures the minimal amount of time must be spent working in the galley and reduces the likelihood of having to just eat what can be grabbed easily.
3 watches incorporating a mother watch (indicated in red)
Suitable for: any voyage when there is sufficient crew
Advantages: keeps the boat ship shape and offers each watch a longer off-watch
Disadvantages: may not be as easy for the crew to follow
The options are endless, however it is advisable to keep the pattern simple. If there is a watch system in place it needs to be enforced, but the skipper needs to be prepared to modify the system if circumstances dictate.
In all but the most basic systems people will not be on watch at the same time each day and the number of hours on and off will change depending on the time of day. Ensuring it is easy to work out who should be on watch or off watch is a good step towards ensuring a smooth running and harmonious ship

Flag Officers Friday Newsletter
Welcome to the Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club Bank Holiday Newsletter.
May saw the continued easing of The Welsh Government Covid Restrictions allowing us to meet initially outdoors and then indoors in groups of 6. Recreational boating and racing resumed with restrictions which meant we could all carefully return to enjoy our boating and socialising activities. Unfortunately, we also witnessed what was, now officially, the wettest May in Wales for 160 years.
There is good news for the forthcoming weekend however with high pressure dominating and the Met Office predicting the return of more seasonal weather and warmer temperatures. There is a full programme of racing scheduled with three days of club racing to decide the winner of the PSC spring series. There is also an ISORA offshore race from Pwllheli to Holyhead on Saturday. CHPSC members will also be in action on Saturday competing in the RORC "Myth of Malham" Yacht Race around the Eddystone Lighthouse on "Pata Negra" skippered by Andrew Hall in preparation for the Fastnet Race in June. Our hopes and best wishes will be with all our racing crews this weekend.
If any of you are setting off on a cruise this weekend or in the near future, don’t forget that we are always on the lookout for interesting articles for inclusion in our newsletters. All contributions and photographs will be welcome and can be sent to
On Monday we took delivery of the long-awaited new benches for the balcony at Plas Heli. We hope that the new additions will improve your enjoyment of the great outdoor spaces at the facility.
Plas Heli also took delivery of a number of additional finger berths which will not only increase capacity but enhance the pontoon area. Many thanks to our CHPSC volunteers for all the hard work involved in their installation.
I have received many enquiries regarding Peter Sykes who many of you know. Peter has been a regular fixture in the harbour for many years living on board his boat “My Helen” on the moorings and more lately in the Hafan Marina. Peter was taken ill some weeks ago and was admitted to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor. He is currently a patient on Glaslyn Ward and is reportedly improving and getting stronger. He will however not be returning to the marina and will require somewhere that provides assisted living in the Pwllheli area. We wish him all the best.
Finally, I hope the predicted fine weather materialises and you all enjoy a great Spring Bank Holiday weekend wherever you may be.

Flag Officers Friday Newsletter
Welcome to this week's edition of the Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club E-Newsletter.
The opening of outdoor hospitality has enabled many members to socialise on the three deck's, enjoying a meal and drink and we look forward to the opening of indoor hospitality next Monday, May 17th when groups of 6 people from multiple households can meet indoors.
Iwan and his team have a regular consultation process with the flag officers so we can ensure members and visitors get the best service as possible at our facility, consistent with current restrictions. The new bench has proved popular and we are pleased that a further five units are on order and will hopefully be with us shortly enabling those sat on the deck to easily enjoy the views.
CHIPAC are having a keelboat experience evening next Friday which kick starts their 2021 activities, and we look forward to the training sessions starting shortly after and hopefully weather allowing, parents will be able to watch from the deck.
Racing started at the beginning of the month, with a report in the racing section below, and continues tomorrow with racing planned around the cans and an ISORA coastal race.
News of the cancellation of the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta, and restrictions around the D2D race that many local boats had planned to enter this summer, has left a gap in many people's schedule - the Flag Officers and Racing Captain Vicky Cox have moved to provide some alternative racing - including the "Tremadog Bay Pop Up Regatta" - see the racing section below. There will be fun racing for cruisers and racers, both NHC and IRC over four days with the emphasis on fun racing with a competitive edge - July 8th-11th

Cruising - Diesel engine troubleshooting - Five minute briefing
Top tips to help keep you going.
Modern marine diesel engines are pretty reliable things - most of the time. Feed them with diesel and air, cool them with seawater/coolant and add sufficient lubricant to keep the cogs turning and they will often give hundreds or thousands of trouble free hours.
However we all have our off-days and diesel engines are no exception. Knowing a few troubleshooting tips will go a long way to keeping you going.
When checking the engine, isolate the engine battery and remove the engine keys, so that others cannot start the engine whilst you have hands in the way. Consider using plastic/latex gloves.
Be fastidious about keeping the engine compartment clean. It makes spotting a potential leak or problem so much easier.
The crankshaft, usually the pulley wheel at the bottom of the engine, usually drives the belts. Belts transfer power to other pulley wheels on the engine and drive the alternator, to provide power to the batteries, and the water pump to circulate cooling water around the engine.
If the belt is too loose:
A slipping or loose belt is often visually indicated by black belt dust around the engine near the pulleys. There are two common types of belt; flat belts or ‘V’ shaped. Consult your owner’s manual about their accurate testing and adjustment, but a common rule of thumb to check adjustment is:
A belt adjusted too tight can put excess pressure on the pulley wheel shaft and increase wear on the shaft bearings of the pulley wheels.
A properly functioning engine does not really consume much lubricating oil; it just uses the oil to lubricate and cool its moving internal parts. So if the correct level is checked it should stay roughly the same and only change over longer periods, unless there is a problem. Oil is kept inside the engine and separate from the water and fuel system by internal seals and gaskets.
The ways that oil escapes from the engine is by leaking through an engine seal or gasket. There are three visual ways to check for oil leaks:
1) Externally looking for leaks around the engine and engine tray
2) Oil leaking through a seal and mixing with the water cooling system.
3) Oil leaking into the combustion chamber, through the piston rings and coming.
The oil will burn in the combustion chamber and change to blue smoke coming out of the exhaust.
Oil levels need monitoring and too much or too little oil is bad for the engine. Looking at the condition of the oil is a little like reading tealeaves.
Many modern marine diesel engines have both seawater cooling and fresh water cooling. The seawater cools the fresh water/coolant that circulates around the engine.
Checking the seawater intake strainer is the main check on the seawater system apart from running the engine and ensuring that seawater is exiting through the exhaust (if you can see it). The exiting seawater water also quietens and cools the exhaust so if water is not passing through the exhaust, the exhaust note sounds hollow.
Times when seawater circulation can be a problem are:
A way of establishing whether the seawater or freshwater system is the problem when the overheat alarm sounds, is to:

In line with Welsh government Covid regulations, we advise the use of the "NHS Covid App" when visiting any of the Plas Heli facilities. The QR codes are on the doors and relevant gates. There is an additional Track, Trace and Protect requirement in the hospitality area, which the panorama staff will manage
Note: elite RYA squad training is permitted indoors, as is indoors organised activity for up to 15 from May 3rd
Restaurant and Lounge Bar - outdoor service has resumed - see details above, with indoor hospitality from May 17th
Plas Heli - Event Pontoons
The pontoons are very busy this year with demand potentially exceeding capacity. A berthing plan has been drawn up and will be emailed to all Plas Heli berthing customers, with the planned location of their berth.
To apply for a berth (seasonal or short term) fill in the berthing application form on the Plas Heli Website here and also email
Once allocated a berth please make all efforts to stay in your allocated space, remembering boats out racing may be short crewed when returning to their berth. Any issues with berths, shore power or water please email
New codes on all gates - please don’t pass on these numbers. Anyone with a genuine need to access the pontoons, compounds or other gated areas will be provided with the code, combination or key. Email
Track and Trace is a Government requirement, please record your details on the sheet provided at the entrance to the bar. It is a Welsh Government recommendation that you also use the NHS app, via the QR codes below. (please check in by using the most relevant one for the part of the centre you are accessing)
Plas Heli, the Welsh National Sailing Academy and Event Centre, has been awarded the venue rights for the 'IRC Welsh National Championships' for 2021 and 2022. The Championship is hosted by Plas Heli, and organised/managed by CHPSC and the RDYC.
We now are recruiting volunteers for event planning purposes and if you would like to contribute, or have any suggestions to enhance the event, please reply to this newsletter. The first planning meeting was held last month via "zoom" to agree the format of racing and framework to publish the Notice of Race. This is now complete and published with the online entry open at the event website here
