CHPSC at the Sail For Gold Regatta |
The Sail for Gold regatta in Weymouth saw over 755 boats, 1072 sailors and 320 coaches from 62 nations competing for honours in all the Olympic and Paralymic classes at this World Cup event.
Team GBR were top nation with 5 Welsh sailors ranked in the top ten across the 11 disciplines. ‘Twiggy’ Grube (who coaches at the Club), Hannah Mills and Stephen Thomas have all secured entries to the Olympic Test Event in August. If they medal again these sailors would then represent the UK at the London 2012 Olympics.
Our top Events team were in attendance and played a important role in mark-laying and safety cover on the windsurfer course. Richard Tate, IRO, was the chief mark-layer supported by Neil Williams, Bryn Ellis, Dez Gulliford, Gareth Roberts, Nick Lowe and Liz Gowers. With a large entry of windsurfers it was necessary to run eight races a day to meet the schedule and consequently the team spent on average an exhausting ten hours a day on the water. Most of the team will now be supporting the Olympic Test event in Weymouth in August and, if selected, the Olympic Games itself in 2012.
‘Speedy’ Hughes was able to assist with the Paralympic Sonar class as a safety boat driver when another volunteer dropped out at short notice. He found the whole experience an enjoyable and looks forward to a future opportunity to help at major regattas.
“Well done” I say – a tremendous effort that secures further recognition of CHPSC’s ability to support major sailing events.
