Who can resist a summer sail round Tremadog bay? And last weekend didn’t disappoint. Despite the heavy rain that flooded many of the roads into the region during Friday, Saturday provided glorious sunshine, and a 9-12kt Easterly/North Easterly wind provided flat seas. The warm weather tempted many shorts and T-shirts on the boats competing in the first day of the Desco cup series and after the final race we couldn’t resist using Robin’s skills on the bridge once more to stage just one more race. Everyone retired to the club balcony to enjoy a beer in the sunshine while discussing the days racing.

Sunday morning was even warmer than Saturday with a warm North-North Westerly wind of 12-15kts. Again, this meant flat seas, and more shorts and T-shirts as the initial cloud burnt off. Everyone agreed beforehand that we’d have three races again, with two counting towards the Desco Cup as planned and the extra one for our own enjoyment. The races were perfectly timed with clouds building just as we finished the last race and everyone returned to the sailing club to enjoy a swift beer and banter between the competing boats and to congratulate the overall winner of the Desco cup, which was quite deservedly won by Jeepster with a consistently outstanding performance.

The whole weekend was a great success with some very exciting racing, including navigation to wrong marks, spinnaker twists, lost halyards, OCSs and just 11seconds separating finishing boats.

This weekend’s forecast (see attached weather below) indicates a similar respite in the current wet weather with similar wind conditions and air temperatures for another great set of races. Saturday’s race is for the King Constantine Cup – an impressive addition to any trophy cabinet on its own (see the attached photo), but this race is also run in conjunction with the ISORA series as the first of the Pwllheli Day races and an opportunity to gain valuable points in this offshore racing series too. This day race, usually around 35miles in distance, is an opportunity to explore the extremities of Tremadog bay and the Llŷn Peninsula in company, whilst still ensuring that everyone gets back to the club in reasonable time to socialise.  There’s no shortage of trophy Sunday either, with two round the cans races giving the opportunity to win the Abererch bowl(see the attached photo).
