Welcome to the first Edition of the CHPSC e-newsletter in 2025.

Dear Members,

Firstly, may I wish you all a very Happy New Year….Blwyddyn Newydd Dda and welcome to the January flag officers newsletter.

May I start by passing my sincere thanks and gratitude to Mark Thompson, as previous commodore, for the excellent work he has done, representing our club, and keeping it literally ship-shape! Mark has kindly agreed to remain on our committee as General Secretary, so remains involved with the club, for which we are very grateful.

And to the rest of the Flag Officers and committee team members for all their hard work over the last year. It’s been wonderful to see how our club, our ‘on the water’ events, our race fleet and social events have all grown. We welcome Vicky Cox to the position of Vice Commodore, and Mike Thorpe has accepted our invitation to step up to Rear Commodore.

2024 saw its challenges, not least of all the weather, but we have had some good reasons for celebration. We welcomed a number of new boats to Pwllheli as members. Our J70 team achieved great results at The Royal Yacht Squadron Commodores invitational regatta, which has resulted in us being invited back for the 2025 event. We held another successful IRC Welsh National Championships, and planning for the 2025 event is already well underway, and several of our members had excellent results in local and national races, such as Round Ireland and ISORA, with our cruising members also reaching far and wide to Scotland, Ireland, The Isle of Man and down to the South of Wales and England.

Looking ahead, we’re excited about the opportunities 2025 holds. With many events on the horizon, upgrades to Plas Heli and our club facilities, and plenty of adventures to be had on and off the water, I can't wait to hear of  another year of unforgettable experiences from you all.

So, as we bid farewell to 2024 and sail into 2025, your flag officers all extend our warmest wishes for a prosperous and joyful New Year to each of you and your loved ones.

May the winds be at your back, the waves calm, and your sails always full.

Warmest regards - Hwyl

‍Lyndsay Harrold

Morlywydd - Commodore

Plas Heli had a very successful 2024, and has built on the successes of 2022, and 2023. This success has culminated this year with the completion of the following facility improvement projects.

  • The two new front doors have now been fitted. This has greatly enhanced the arrival experience at Plas Heli and includes three new media screens so that we can share information.

  • New toilet block. The container style toilet block has arrived and will add to our event facility toilet options. The drains are laid, and the block is now ready to be connected to the services.

  • New Committee Boat. We are delighted to announce the purchase of a new Committee Boat, to strengthen our fleet to three. “Dylan ail Don” a Freeward 35 will arrive by road on 6th January 2025.  More information here.
  •  Plas Heli Pontoons. We reconfigured the pontoons in again 2024 which allowed us to meet the growing demand. We reconfigured the versadock and now have plans for new berths. Applications for berths in 2025 are now invited. See the list here
  • Shower Cabins. Plas Heli Pontoon customers now have the use of shower cabin in Caban Heli with additional upgrade works completed.

  • Dinghy Wash-down Area. This area has been upgraded again with a retaining wall with new taps and hook-ups for power washers. This work also incorporates a beach shower.

  • Ystafell Richard Tudor. Our Training room accessed from the main reception area has been dedicated to Richard Tudor in recognition to his substantial contribution to the development of the Academy and his role to the wider boating community.
  • CCTV and Wi-Fi: We have extended our CCTV coverage significantly. This is for crime prevention and detection, everyone's security, welfare and for insurance purposes. We also have site-wide fast Wi-Fi.

  • Project Works for 2025: We have more landscaping projects in the pipeline including work on Cei Heli and a new security barrier access to Cei Heli for our pontoon customers. Planning applications are being submitted for a new toilet shower block within the main compound, and for further enhancements to Caban Heli.

Plas Heli 10 years - As we approach our 10th anniversary in May 2025, we celebrate the growth in events and overall activity at Plas Heli.

  • Events in 2024 - We hosted eight significant sailing events in 2024 including the IRC Welsh National Championship, Merlin Rocket Nationals Silver Tiller, Supernova Nationals, ILCA Welsh Nationals, Optimist IOCA National Championship, GP14 World Championships, UKLA Laser Qualifier Championship and the RYA CW Youth and Junior Championships. This was in addition to many regional and National Training Camps.

  • Events in 2024 - We are now planning for 2025 with an exciting diary of events, starting with the RYA UK Youth Championships in April and then the IRC Welsh National Championship and the Topper NS4 Coastal Championship in May. We will host the Welsh National ILCA Championship in July. In August we will host the UKLA ILCA National Championships and the Techno World Championship. The RYA CW Youth and Junior Championships will again be in September. See all of our events listed here.

We continue to work closely with RYA CW to provide facilities for training camps, storage, and activities, and we respect the strategic importance of the facilities for events, training and boating in Wales. We are pleased that the new fleet of 18 RYA CW lasers will be at Plas Heli see this report in New ILCA Fleet for Welsh Sailing Thanks to Sport Wales Grant.

Community engagement works continues and included our work with clubs and associations, assistance with facilities for a disability boat, fundraising events, classrooms for community groups, meetings, teaching and our work with children in-need.

Catering at the centre is with our franchisee operator Sean Devlin Ltd.

We are reliant on volunteers and are of course, grateful for all assistance provided by our stakeholder groups and clubs and in particular the Commodore and Flag Officers of Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club.
