CHIPAC 420 Registration for beginners between the ages of eight and eleven will take place at 5pm on Monday the 14th of April, at the Pwllheli Sailing Club. Members must be able to swim.

A warm welcome is extended to children and parents.

Registration for experienced sailors, up to seventeen years of age will be at 6.30pm the same night.

The 420 ranking series arrived at Hayling Island last weekend for the Spring Championships. 44 boats took to the water, including 4 Irish visiting crews. The Pwllheli Sailing Club girls (Mari Davies & Sarah Norbury) managed to repeat their paerformance from the previous qualifier in Pwllheli by again finishing as leading ladies in 3rd place overall, only 1 point behind the 2nd placed boys.

After the first two qualifiers the girls top the GBR ranking list with a total of 37 points. Their nearest rivals have 90 points- quite a lead going into the final qualifier which will be the RYA Youth Championships in Weymouth next month.

The club welcomed the 420 class last weekend for their Winter Championships. Over 40 boats were entered including a significant Irish representation.

The event forms part of the selection series for British teams for the 420 European and World Championships during the summer of 2014.

Despite the weather forecast, the race committee succeeded in completing 4 races on Saturday under blue skies, with moderate winds but a big chop. The conditions proved challenging in terms of maintaining good boat speed.

At the end of the first days racing, Tim Riley and James Taylor led the way on a perfect 3 points with the Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli female team of Sarah Norbury and Mari Davies close on their heels in second with 5 points.

Photo: Gbr 54510 (Norbury/Davies) starting on the pin end. Mari and Sarah - 10th in Imperia Winter Regatta Last Monday, Mari and Sarah flew out to Nice, on route to the Imperia Winter Regatta. After a short taxi ride over the border they arrived in the Italian coastal town. Neil Marsden (Gbr team coach) was waiting for them after his long drive over with the boats.

The regatta is a well established part of the European 420 calendar with 120 boats competing this year from 11 nations. The girls were very impressed with the picturesque venue and the food was very good too apparently!

After one day of training and venue familiarisation, the 4 day race series began. After the dissapointment of an ocs on day 1, the girls built a solid set of mostly top 10 results. By the end of the regatta they had climbed to 10th place overall- their best international result to date.

They will fly back on Sunday night and try to get a couple of days in at school before training in Pwllheli next weekend with the GBR squad.

They will also get their first look at their brand new Mackay 420- big thank-you to WYA!

Last weekend, Grafham Sailing Club hosted the 420 Winter Championships. This is the final event of rhe year on the British 420 calendar. Mari Davies & Sarah Norbury sailed very consistantly, finishing in the top 8 in all of the seven races to claim 4th place overall and 1st Girls.

In addition to their selection for the Gbr youth squad, the RYA are providing them with additional Targeted Support. This allows them to travel to a number of events on the European curcuit. During the Autumn they competed in Bordeaux and will be racing in Imperia, Northern Italy before Christmas.

Club members, Mari Davies and Sarah Norbury won the title at Rutland over the weekend. They are both 16 years of age and compete in the Open Youth (U19) category, which means that they needed to beat the best male sailors in Britain- and managed to do that by 10 points!

Four races were held on Saturday with another two on Sunday in winds approaching 28 knots by the end. The girls were very consistent, scoring 3 thirds, a second and 1 race win in the 37 boat fleet.

Pwllheli CHIPAC sailor, Gethin Llewelyn Owen, achieved a fantastic 4th place in the Senior Fleet of the Volvo Gill Optimist British and Open Championship on 27th July - 2nd August 2013 in Largs.
